Advanced Alcohol Testing with PEth

SpotCheck Plus utilizes PEth (Phosphatidylethanol) testing to track alcohol consumption patterns over the past month. PEth accumulates in red blood cells after alcohol intake, providing a reliable and detailed picture of drinking behavior for up to 4 weeks—offering deeper insights into alcohol use beyond simple detection.
What Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) Measures
Phosphatidylethanol 16:0/18:1 (PEth) is a category of phospholipids that form on the surface of an individual’s red blood cells following alcohol consumption. While PEth levels will start to rise after a single drinking episode, the accumulation of PEth, identified through LCMS, helps characterize past drinking behaviors and patterns. The PEth result will fall into one of four general ranges for clinical consideration and interpretation.

<10 ng/ml | No Consumption
Indicates abstinence from alcohol.

10-20 ng/ml | Light or Limited Consumption
Indicates minimal alcohol consumption or limited occasional social drinking up to four weeks before specimen collection.

20-200 ng/ml | Significant Consumption
Indicates a moderate level of alcohol consumption up to four weeks before specimen collection.

>200 ng/ml | Heavy Consumption
Indicates excessive alcohol consumption up to four weeks before specimen collection.

Beyond Alcohol with SpotCheck Plus
Increase patient accountability and avert crisis by monitoring both adherence and recidivism. The SpotCheck Plus panel also includes common mental health prescriptions and frequently abused substances, providing a vital and comprehensive data set for informed and personalized patient care.
